The Greatest Country Music 5k Ever Created; But the Worst Email

by Lindy

Who else likes to proofread marketing emails at 6:00 a.m. just for fun? When trying to awake this morning, I scanned my email and stumbled on this gem – the ‘Greatest Country Music 5k Ever Created’. Of course I had to open it. And then, I was assaulted by spelling/punctuation/consistency/formatting issues.

Here is the email in question and my subsequent response to them. How many errors can you find?

My email response:

There are several spelling errors in this email.
I can proofread it for you:

  • Country doesn’t need to be capitalized mid sentence (country music)
  • Too, not to. (Ice cold beer too)
  • Early, not ealry
  • March 15, 2015 (comma, not period)
  • Is the promo code facebook or Facebook? You have two versions listed; capitalized or lowercase?
  • No exclamation point before a comma
  • Comma after October 12 (not October 12 2014)
  • Copyright 20XX should be 2014

I like the concept of the race and I’m interested. Can I get a bigger discount for proofreading? 😉 I know you are trying to appeal to country lovers, but spelling and punctuation, attention to detail is still important.

###

Would you run the Greatest Country Music 5k Ever Created? Would you run in cowboy boots? Of course I would; country costumes, beer, music, dancing…cornhole! Maybe there will even be moonshine! I can guarantee there won’t be any spelling bees, however, which is a shame, because you know I would totally win.

UPDATE: I received a response from the race promoter (after they sent out the same email again and I replied): “I am so sorry, we have been on the road for events. I know that’s not an excuse, but we will fix it before the next one, I promise!” Needless to say, I asked again for a race entry for compensation for my proofreading. I’m intrigued by this race!

Lindy’s Nautical 40th Birthday Party Mix Tape

by Lindy

“Lindy’s Nautical 40th” birthday party is just two months away and planning is well under way! Invitations have been designed and sent out. Shout out to Courtney Mansell Design (former maiden name Van Laar) for her most awesome graphic design skills. We work closely together on projects all the time, and I’m always in debt to her for the magical way she pulls concepts together.

We are going to be taking a three hour tour on the Newport Beach Harbor Tiki Boat by Fun Zone Boats. They feature charter and party boat trips in Newport Beach, California. The photos of their booze cruises look epic! Of course, I have a comprehensive list of my own ideas to make it even more memorable and fun. Battle Shots, anyone? Nautical costumes and regalia? There will be a taco bar, regular bar, DJ and a Gilligan’s Island vibe. Photo ops galore!

Next steps are my music curation for the DJ and the party mix tape. I created a Google Docs online form to help gather all the best music requests for the party ‘mix tape’. Aside from the obvious dance hits of more recent times, here are some of my classic song faves from the last four decades (in no particular order.) If you haven’t heard these before, you’re missing out. Go to your nearest online radio platform now to check them out.

No Hood Rat Left Behind! (Or Dehydrated)

by Lindy

Our fun neighbor friends, self-proclaimed ‘hood rats’, decided to do the Gladiator Rock ‘n Run last Saturday; all because of a too-good-to-be-true Groupon deal that we couldn’t possibly pass up.

I was a little nervous to run the 6k + obstacle course and mud run, but we ended up kicking ass and taking names! And we looked good doing it! (Well, not really, but kind of.) We all finished strong and only bypassed one obstacle – walking over staggered, upright 2x4s (due to being ‘vertically-challenged’.) Plus, we told each other, the line was too long anyway, and we didn’t want to delay our times any more than we had to.  My results: 1:27:40.9 | 23:31 | overall 1333 | females 526 | age division 103. It may not seem impressive, but I amazed myself! I was even able to climb to the top of the rope and ring the bell – which some Army Rangers can’t even do (unverified).

We have so many excellent photos from race day, not to mention crazy-funny memories, but I’ll share just a few here. For the ‘cherry on the sundae’, here is an awesome video I posted on YouTube showing how I trained for the Gladiator Rock ‘n Run – with the magic of PRANCERCISE!

Tainted Souls Live in Sandefjord, Norway

Murphy’s Irish Pub, Sandefjord, Norway

When we were in Larvik, Norway, we were able to go see Tainted Souls in concert. They were playing live at Murphy’s in Sandefjord and had taken their fans from Oslo to/from the concert in a big party bus. I’m psyched my cousin Heidi was able to come with us and we could share some beers and good conversation. It was also cool to meet so many fun and interesting new people!

We got there well before the concert began, so we were able to hang out and meet the band and their friends, family and fans. Everyone was extremely cool and we had a great time, first having tapas at Da Vinci’s across the street and then at Murphy’s Irish Pub for drinks. Murphy’s was a cool pub with a lot of space to mingle and hang out. At the same time the band was setting up, there was an awesome birthday party going on for a girl named Pia, and everyone was dressed from in 1920s flapper era attire. They were all extremely attractive and having a blast. Sorry I didn’t get a picture of it; you’ll have to trust me that it was a sight.

Pre-Concert Drinks. What? Jonathan drinking an unleaded Coke?!

As a side note, you will never see Jonathan go to a bar and drink an unleaded Coke; there would usually be Jack Daniels in there with just a splash of Coke. However, in Norway, the DUI laws are very serious (.2% BAL) and he adhered to the law that evening. I was happy that I wasn’t the D.D. and that Heidi was with us too, because she was familiar with the area and there was a lot of road construction and closures. I would have gotten us lost and mangled if I were driving with only the assistance of Google Maps.

Morten Representing Surfrider Foundation on Stage

I had given Morten, the lead singer, a Surfrider Foundation Newport Beach Chapter t-shirt as his wife’s a surfer and I want to bring Surfrider to Norway. It was cool that he wore the shirt on stage! During set up, there was an issue with the sound system, so there was some band angst in calling in some back up help, but the crew got it worked out and the band sounded great. It was a very interactive and engaging concert! Morten chatted it up with the crowd between songs and the fans sang along and took lots of photos and videos throughout. He’d even brought Pia, the birthday girl, up on stage to sing Happy Birthday to her! I’d listened to their CD Mercury Mind several times before the trip, so I was familiar with the catchy songs and they did several cool cover songs as well. My favorite was Chris Isaac’s “Wicked Game” – it’s a classic and they performed it well.

See more photos from Murphy’s Irish Pub and other concerts in their website’s concert gallery. You should also keep up with them on their Facebook and Twitter. They’ll be playing in Southern California early September 2013, so make sure to save the date if you’re on the west coast.

In my next and final post in my Norwegian travel writing series, I’ll cover our last four days in Norway, which we spent in the beautiful mountain town of Lillehammer, Norway’s Olympic city. Read about it here.
