Unplugged: Scare Away the Dark

by Lindy

Howdy!

It’s been four months since I’ve written a blog post. No apologies or remorse. I’ve been immersed in living, working, vacationing, socializing, mothering, exercising, surviving.

In the grand scheme of things, blogging (and podcasting) has taken a backseat to enjoying life and all its craziness. I do enjoy writing and publishing, so I’m not giving it up. Just not being as regimented. This new song by Passenger, Scare Away the Dark, so beautifully captures the importance of unplugging from technology and connecting with the outside world and people. Read the lyrics and see the video below.

Lyrics: Scare Away the Dark
well sing
sing at the top of your voice
and love without fear in your heart
feel, feel like you still have a choice
if we all light up we can scare away the dark

we wish our weekdays away
spend our weekends in bed
we drink ourselves stupid
and work ourselves dead
and all just because
that’s what mum and dad said we should do
but we should run through the forests
we should swim in the streams
we should laugh we should cry
we should love we should dream
we should stare at the stars
and not just at screens
you should hear what i’m saying
and know what it means to sing

sing at the top of your voice
and love without fear in your heart
feel, feel like you still have a choice
if we all light up we can scare away the dark

well we wish we were happier, thinner and fitter
we wish we weren’t losers and liars and quitters
we want something more not just nasty and bitter
we want something real not just hashtags and twitter
it’s the meaning of life and it’s streamed live on youtube
but i bet gangnam style would still get more views
and we’re scared of drowning and flyers and shooters
but we’re all slowly dying in front of computers so sing

sing at the top of your voice now
oh and love without fear in your heart
can you feel, feel like you still have a choice
if we all light up we can scare away the dark

oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh

well sing
sing at the top of your voice
and love without fear in your heart
feel, feel like you still have a choice
if we all light up we can scare away the dark

Let me know what you do to unplug from computers and connect with the outside world.

Passenger’s new album Whispers is available on Amazon.com. You can even get it on vinyl with a free MP3 download to boot! I’m getting the vinyl for my Crosley retro record player.

Amazon Editorial Review:

“Mike Rosenberg, aka Passenger, presents Whispers, the follow up to 2012 s All The Little Lights, which featured the international hit single and 3x Platinum “Let Her Go.”

Recorded in Sydney and co-produced by Chris Vallejo, Whispers is comprised of 11 tracks that tell tales some real, some imagined of love, death, growing up and getting old. A master of story telling, Passenger yet again strikes the perfect balance between the heartbreaking and the humorous, all wrapped in beautiful instrumentation, creating a sumptuous, symphonic sound.

“This is easily the most “up” album I’ve ever made,” explains Passenger. “It s quite cinematic. There are lots of big stories and big ideas. There are also some somber moments about loneliness and death but, hey, it wouldn’t be a Passenger album without those. Mostly though, it s a really positive album.”

Lead single “Scare Away The Dark,” which is already a fan favorite at live shows, presents listeners with a different side of Passenger than the one they’ve come to know from international smash single “Let Her Go.” It s a riotous rant about technology taking over our lives, calling on listeners to seize the moment and embrace life. Though he didn’t realize it at the time, title track “Whispers” captures the chaos in Passenger’s head as “Let Her Go” began to snowball. “Heart’s On Fire” is the album’s grandest love song, starting sparse on finger picked guitar and building into a dramatic, passionate, strings-soaked plea to the person you can’t get out of your head.”

Festive Air Force Band Flash Mob

by Lindy

Someone shared this video with me the other day and I found it so beautiful and inspiring. It was a flash mob of the Air Force Band at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C. on December 3rd.

As an Air Force vet, I’m proud to see all the sharply dressed airmen in their dress blues playing such powerfully beautiful Christmas music.

The Air Force band’s orchestral flash mob definitely gets you in the festive spirit!

Support the Air Force Band online:

Download a free MP3 of the Holiday Flash Mob – go to and find the center link for “Download the Flash Mob Audio file Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring/Joy to the World.” Right click and “save as” or “save target as” – then download!

Bert and Ernie’s Christmas Special

by Lindy

Oh wow, this is the funniest, most nostalgic video of Bert and Ernie of Soprano Sesame Street!

“The Bert and Ernie Christmas Special with Tony Sirico and Steve Schirripa.”

Sometimes Bert and Ernie seem like a couple of wise guys and that’s why they’ve hired actual wise guys, Tony Sirico and Steve Schirripa, to play themselves in this very festive Bert and Ernie Christmas Special. – Sesame Street team

Just in case you’re wondering, yes, I AM watching the Sesame Street Channel on YouTube without any child present. I’m a little immature. I really love the celebrity cameos on their videos, but nothing beats the classic characters like Bert, Ernie, Grover, Oscar the Grouch, Big Bird and Snuffleupagus.

TEDx Orange Coast: Niia Bertino Singing Text Message

by Lindy

It was honor to be able to attend last Friday’s TEDx Orange Coast at Segerstrom Hall in Costa Mesa (thanks to the awesome promo from OC PRSA).

The opening ‘talk’ was from singer Niia Bertino, who actually borrowed a guy’s cell phone from the audience and sang his text message conversation thread. It was so hilarious, yet her song made it touching and beautiful too.

I am psyched I found someone captured it and uploaded it to You Tube so I can share it. Enjoy!
