Spotify Word Genre

by Lindy

I’m not sure if you’re already familiar with Spotify or not. It is one of the numerous options available to listen to music – on your phone, PC, tablet. (It’s free with ads/paid for ad-free).

I’m always looking for the ideal channel to tune into on Spotify for just the right music to work and be productive. It’s hit or miss a lot of the time. You might like one song, but not the next 20. (But I’m too lazy to do a few extra clicks to change it up.)

Lately, I’ve discovered a random and interesting genre on Spotify called ‘Word’ (at the very bottom of the options under ‘Browse’). It is so intriguing… When trying to focus on work, you can’t really listen to and absorb it all, but it’s nice to have on in the background to take some of your mind off the mundane. Check it out: https://open.spotify.com/genre/word.

Spotify Word

The Spotify Word playlists are eclectic and unique – poetry, speeches, stories, meditation, self help, foreign languages, vintage radio, children’s stories, presidential voices and more. They have specific writers featured in some playlists as well – Shakespeare, Bronte, Jane Austen, Noam Chomsky, Emily Dickinson… You can learn what you might have missed in high school English!

The voice actors can be varied, dramatic and entertaining. A few times I’ve tuned into the Shakespeare poetry playlist and got entranced in it. It’s nearly impossible to comprehend what is being said, but it transports you to another place in time. Then, at random, you start speaking in Old English to your colleagues.

I highly recommend exploring it for yourself. Play some for the children in your life for good measure. It’s truly a fun and passive learning experience.

Folk Yeah: S.O.B. by Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats

by Lindy

I absolutely love this song and video by Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats – S.O.B.

His voice is gravely and rustic, reminding me of some of my favorite classic country artists. The video and music is similar to the vibe of O Brother Where Art Thou with the folk elements. The hand clapping, foot stomping, humming and swearing/shouting is infectious. The prison story element is compelling – nod to Greg Barnes and Melissa Giles, producers.

I don’t have personal experience with delirium tremens or alcoholism, but can relate to needing a stiff drink on occasion. Cheers!

You can purchase this Nathaniel Rateliff and the Nightsweats album on CD, MP3 or vinyl!

PSA From Weird Al: Word Crimes

by Lindy

This is the best song, video and message for the masses! Word crimes are the worst kind of crime; so insidious and heinous.

Weird Al Yankovic continues to entertain and educate. I love him!

By the way, does my communiqué make my butt look big?

You’re welcome!

Introducing an Ingenious New Work Desk

by Lindy

At work, I’ve been known to sit on an exercise ball, peddle an under-the-desk stationary bicycle and do crunches while I sit at my desk. I like to multi-task by marking items off the to do list while working on my fitness simultaneously. I’ve always wanted a stand up desk or treadmill desk, but could never justify the cost…until now.

Knowing about my enthusiasm for such health/productivity devices, a conscientious coworker introduced me to a new phenomenon I can embrace – the ‘Hamster Wheel Standing Desk‘!! Even better, it’s a DIY project you can do for a team building exercise.

In the future, I would like to have a ‘fishbowl’ work desk invented: a small swim spa, floating desk and waterproof PC. Can someone in Redmond get on this stat? Heated water, please.

The Greatest Country Music 5k Ever Created; But the Worst Email

by Lindy

Who else likes to proofread marketing emails at 6:00 a.m. just for fun? When trying to awake this morning, I scanned my email and stumbled on this gem – the ‘Greatest Country Music 5k Ever Created’. Of course I had to open it. And then, I was assaulted by spelling/punctuation/consistency/formatting issues.

Here is the email in question and my subsequent response to them. How many errors can you find?

My email response:

There are several spelling errors in this email.
I can proofread it for you:

  • Country doesn’t need to be capitalized mid sentence (country music)
  • Too, not to. (Ice cold beer too)
  • Early, not ealry
  • March 15, 2015 (comma, not period)
  • Is the promo code facebook or Facebook? You have two versions listed; capitalized or lowercase?
  • No exclamation point before a comma
  • Comma after October 12 (not October 12 2014)
  • Copyright 20XX should be 2014

I like the concept of the race and I’m interested. Can I get a bigger discount for proofreading? 😉 I know you are trying to appeal to country lovers, but spelling and punctuation, attention to detail is still important.

###

Would you run the Greatest Country Music 5k Ever Created? Would you run in cowboy boots? Of course I would; country costumes, beer, music, dancing…cornhole! Maybe there will even be moonshine! I can guarantee there won’t be any spelling bees, however, which is a shame, because you know I would totally win.

UPDATE: I received a response from the race promoter (after they sent out the same email again and I replied): “I am so sorry, we have been on the road for events. I know that’s not an excuse, but we will fix it before the next one, I promise!” Needless to say, I asked again for a race entry for compensation for my proofreading. I’m intrigued by this race!
