Ricky Gervais on Creativity

by Lindy

Comedian Ricky Gervais recently talked about his love for expressing his creativity online in his blog post: The Internet is my Playground.

“Scientific studies of creativity have basically concluded that it can’t be taught, as it is a “facility” rather than a learned skill. Putting it very crudely, creativity is the ability to play. And, to be able to turn that facility on and off when necessary. This makes perfect sense to me. Everything I’ve ever written, created or discovered artistically has come out of playing.”

“The answer is simple. Never grow up. I don’t mean don’t become an adult with responsibility and the weight of the world on your shoulders. I simply mean if you’re writing or directing give yourself enough time to play. Play the fool. Goad. Shock. Laugh. Trip over something that isn’t there. Try something. And never be afraid to fail. That failure is useful too. It’s just another building block.” – Ricky Gervais

I’ve seen some of Ricky Gervais’ You Tube videos as well as read his tweets and he always cracks me up. His boisterous laugh is irresistible and contagious! Here’s a video he made with Karl Pilkington to teach English; encouraging others to take the video and add their own language subtitles and re-post it to their channel. (I saw it in Norwegian months ago but now I can’t find it.)

I share a similar philosophy of ‘playing online’ for my own amusement but I admire his limitless boundaries for creativity and ability to surprise.

More about Ricky Gervais

P.S. As a side note, I created this post to test out the WordPress app on my phone. It sucks. I don’t recommend it. I had to go back to the computer to make it do all the things I needed it to do. You would be better served using WordPress on your phone’s web browser. You’re welcome!

Kreative FM Podcast Launched

by Lindy

After many months of talking about having a podcast, I’ve actually published my first episode! I laid the backend framework a while back, but was waiting on inspiration to record my introduction (similar to procrastination). It wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be and I’ve decided not to be so critical of my robotic voice. Hopefully over time with practice, I’ll improve.

To learn more about my new Kreative FM podcast, visit my podcast page and be sure to listen to my intro episode. I hope that it doesn’t take months to record and publish episode two, three, four and beyond, so be sure to subscribe to it with the RSS feed.

No Hood Rat Left Behind! (Or Dehydrated)

by Lindy

Our fun neighbor friends, self-proclaimed ‘hood rats’, decided to do the Gladiator Rock ‘n Run last Saturday; all because of a too-good-to-be-true Groupon deal that we couldn’t possibly pass up.

I was a little nervous to run the 6k + obstacle course and mud run, but we ended up kicking ass and taking names! And we looked good doing it! (Well, not really, but kind of.) We all finished strong and only bypassed one obstacle – walking over staggered, upright 2x4s (due to being ‘vertically-challenged’.) Plus, we told each other, the line was too long anyway, and we didn’t want to delay our times any more than we had to.  My results: 1:27:40.9 | 23:31 | overall 1333 | females 526 | age division 103. It may not seem impressive, but I amazed myself! I was even able to climb to the top of the rope and ring the bell – which some Army Rangers can’t even do (unverified).

We have so many excellent photos from race day, not to mention crazy-funny memories, but I’ll share just a few here. For the ‘cherry on the sundae’, here is an awesome video I posted on YouTube showing how I trained for the Gladiator Rock ‘n Run – with the magic of PRANCERCISE!

We’re definitely going to do this race again in 2014! But this time I’ll train a bit harder. See you there?

Typewriter Tweet

Typewriter Tweet

Typewriter Tweet: “Stop ‘being social’ and start cleaning the messy office.”
#procrastination

My typewriter, affectionately named Buelah Hildegard Francis, is excellent for tweeting. Instead of disappearing into the vast wasteland of Twitter, my <140-character tweet is captured beautifully here for eternity on a sheet of 8 1/2 x 11 paper for me and my four household ‘followers’ to see.

The message and takeaway from this typewriter tweet is that I should really focus more time and energy on the ‘real world’ instead of dwelling so much in the online social realm. There is an entire office of clutter literally screaming for attention! I’ll get to it; maybe tomorrow.
